Peter Cleutjens: City Seconds 2002-2015

In mijn fotosequenties gaat het niet om het beslissende moment (‘the decisive moment’) maar om het gebied tussen snapshot en film. In dit gebied bevinden zich gebeurtenissen en vormen die te langzaam zijn voor de snapshot maar te snel en onnadrukkelijk voor film. In dit gebied is een dusdanige vertraging van de waarneming noodzakelijk dat datgene wat ik wil tonen pas zichtbaar wordt in een simultane vertoning in één vlak. De opvolgende momenten werken als een mechanische kwast die het doek vult van linksboven naar rechts beneden. Van 2006 tot 2008 werden de City Seconds tweewekelijks gepubliceerd in de Amsterdam Weekly. Voor mijn bijdragen aan de Amsterdam Weekly ontving ik in 2008 De European Newspaper Award in de categorie Concept.

Serial Photography (2008) Exhibition in 2x2 Projects, Amsterdam

In "Serial Photography" 2x2projects presents three contemporary artists that will show recent work. All three have a documentary photographic result taken from public space. In this exhibition it will become evident that the serial aspect in their work is unmistakably adding new layers.

Peter Cleutjens takes the roll of a street choreographer. With a predefined number of exposures and his magic ability to predict a possible outcome of a performance by random people on a random street, he makes us witness short stories. The act, captured by his camera, takes a beautiful and sometimes hilarious turn once the sequence of photos has started. The result of such performance, when presented as a set of images, become a frozen stop motion animation, a short dance, or a mini theatrical play. The simple fact like order of hand gestures of people discussing, the change of shade of large panels being hauled at a construction site, the splash of rainwater a car throws at pedestrians become a recognizable fragment of life extracted within a few seconds between the first and the last image of a sequence.
